In this tender debut documentary feature, trans filmmaker Quen Wong comes out of “stealth” to address the erasure of trans identities in conservative Singapore. Turning her camera on herself, she embarks on a revelatory emotional quest to love herself completely by confronting her pre-transition photographs.

Through intimate footage, archival photos, and compelling voice-over narration, Wong has crafted a deeply moving love letter to multiple generations of trans women. Some Women unveils a hidden chapter of Singaporean history through trans pioneer Sanisa’s recollections of the original Bugis street: once a nightly entertainment district and home to a vibrant LGBTQ+ community, the queer Bugis street of the 1950s-80s has since been scrubbed away. Wong likewise reaches out to Lune Loh, a young trans lesbian protesting for her right to gender expression in high school. Infused with thought-provoking personal and sociocultural insights, Wong’s uplifting documentary places a beautiful emphasis on love, introspection, and gender euphoria.
